Reading exception memos the way a reviewer does

Exception approvals often carry the real story of a loan origination application — if the memo matches the evidence.

Handwritten notes beside a printed credit memorandum

An exception memo that restates the borrower’s story without addressing the breached clause is decoration. In a financial audit of loan origination applications, we look for three anchors: the policy line waived, the compensating control claimed, and the authority of the signer.

Stamp-only approvals without a named delegate trail are a frequent defect in branch-originated SME files. So are memos dated after drawdown that attempt to cure a condition precedent after the fact.

If your authority matrix allows dual approval above a threshold, the file should show both signatures — not one signature and a helpful cover email elsewhere in the archive.
